SUMMARY:Counted Out | Film Screening & Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 20 | Film: 7PM (1H 30M) | 30 Panel Discussion Post-Film\na joint event produced by Dickinson College & the Carlisle Theatre \nCo-sponsored by the Clarke Forum\, the LGBTQ+ Center\, the Office of Diversity Equity & Inclusion\, the Women’s & Gender Resource Center\, and the departments of Data Analytics\, Economics\, Environmental Studies & Environmental Science & Mathematics & Computer Science. \n“Counted Out investigates the biggest crises of our time through an unexpected lens: math. In our current information economy\, math is everywhere. The people we date\, the news we see\, the influence of our votes\, the candidates who win elections\, the education we have access to\, the jobs we get—all of it is underwritten by an invisible layer of math that few of us understand\, or even notice. But whether we know it or not\, our numeric literacy—whether we can speak the language of math—is a critical determinant of social and economic power. Through a mosaic of personal stories\, expert interviews\, and scenes of math transformation in action\, Counted Out shows what’s at risk if we keep the status quo. Do we want an America in which most of us don’t consider ourselves “math people”? Where math proficiency goes down as students grow up? Or do we want a country where everyone can understand the math that undergirds our society—and can help shape it?”

SUMMARY:The Vagina Monologues [a blackbox theatre experience]
DESCRIPTION:The Vagina Monologues [a blackbox theatre experience]\nWritten by Eve Ensler | Directed by Chris Kapp\nPresented by Players on High at the Carlisle Theatre \nSaturday\, February 8 @ 7:30pm\nSunday\, February 9 @ 2:00pm \n“In 1994\, a play called The Vagina Monologues\, written by playwright and activist V (formerly Eve Ensler)\, broke ground\, offering to the world a piece of art like nothing it had seen before. Based on dozens of interviews V conducted with women\, the play addressed women’s sexuality and the social stigma surrounding rape and abuse\, creating a new conversation about and with women. The Vagina Monologues ran Off-Broadway for five years in New York and then toured the United States. After every performance\, V found women waiting to share their own stories of survival\, leading her to see that The Vagina Monologues could be more than a moving work of art on violence; she divined that the performances could be a mechanism for moving people to act to end violence. On Valentine’s Day 1998\, V\, with a group of women in New York City\, established V-Day. Set up as a 501(c)(3) and originally staffed by volunteers\, the organization’s seed money came from a star-studded\, sold out benefit performance at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York\, a show that raised $250\,000 in a single evening for local anti-violence groups including Safe Horizon\, and Sakhi. \nV-Day’s mission is simple. It demands that violence against all women\, girls and the Earth must end.” \nA portion of proceeds will be donated to the Carlisle YWCA in awareness of ({V-Day}): a global movement that uses art and activism to end violence against all women\, girls\, and the Earth.

SUMMARY:Rivers with special guest Big Sky Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Rivers with special guest Big Sky Quartet\nSaturday\, January 18\, 2025 | 7:30PM \nRivers Bio | Born out of the simple idea to be able to play anywhere and at any time gave rise to central Pennsylvania’s indie-folk group Rivers. Brought together and baptized by the mighty Susquehanna\, and with just simple acoustic instruments\, the power trio amasses an eclectic inundation of sound. Made up of Joe Schaefer (bass)\, Matthew Sinkovitz (percussion)\, and Vincent Yarnell (guitar and banjo)\, they spatter forth an electrifying array of technical nuance and heavy-thumping beats worthy to be remembered. Rivers’ style is a wash of genres that defies classification and leaves audiences thirsty for more. Now this folk slaps. \n[This concert is produced by the Carlisle Theatre as part of our mainstage concert series\, supporting local & regional artists.]
